A Lesson from the Ferret
Project type
Oil Painting
Here’s a stark contrast between how animals and humans experience time. Animals instinctively live in the present, They do not dwell on the past or worry about the future. Nomadic cultures, especially, observe animals and believe their instinctive ways of living is a form of wisdom worth emulating
Humans are tied to time in a way animals are not. We obsess over the past and future. Seldom do we dwell in the present. So why might we want to live in the now? I cannot speak for others, but I find that creating art embodies this idea. The best art often comes when I least expect it simply by staying present and allowing the work to flow from the moment. It happens when I’m not worrying about future outcomes or dwelling on past mistakes. Like an instinct. Like the ferret. Thus my art flows more freely when I release the past and the future.
Perhaps releasing our preoccupation on the past and future can benefit people of all disciplines? If the best art comes from the present moment, what other remarkable things might we create from this mindset?
