The Moth's Dream
Medium
Gouache and Acrylic Painting
This artwork is inspired by the musings of a Chinese philosopher, Zhuang Zi who suggested our existence on earth is akin to a mere dream. He questioned if we could be butterflies dreaming that we are humans, implying that time is fluid rather than fixed and that our identities and states of consciousness are shifting constantly. In other words, if everything is a dream, then time is irrelevant.
In my interpretation, I painted a moth instead of a butterfly. It is not my intention to convince anyone that we are butterflies or moths, but to simply ponder how little we really know of the nature of time, this world, and our identities. Because the truth is, we cannot prove that we are not butterflies dreaming we are humans. Yet as humans we tend to have a habit of thinking that all the beliefs we hold are true when in reality, how much do we know?
