Three Cattails

Project type

Oil Painting

My intent with this piece was to draw viewers in with it's simple composition. Aside from the meerkats skittering across a hot sandy desert, there are no other forms of life in sight. The sand is portrayed as a hazy gradient of strokes. I imagine deserts might look something like this when one spends too much time in them. The monotonous landscape and shimmering heat cause one's eyes to betray them. For humans, this environment is hostile indeed. Yet these small bony creatures manage to thrive. Perhaps this is a friendly reminder that we are all different and will, as one might expect, thrive in very different environments. People should not compare themselves to meerkats, much less fellow humans. As humans, we have a tendency to think of ourselves as failures when we see those who are more successful than us according to the standards set by society. Maybe that's the wrong way to think about it. Maybe we are trying to thrive in a desert which was designed for meerkats, not us. Of course, the solution to escaping the desert will differ from person to person, but it is always better to try than to regret.
